Lulu was at the stove, poaching a couple of eggs for breakfast. There was already some fried ham, and she had a bit of Hollandaise left over from dinner the night before -- perfect for Eggs Benedict.

She was humming to herself as she worked, completely oblivious to anything odd or exciting that might be going on in Fandom this weekend.

"Joanne," Jean-Paul said again, bending down to the little girl's level, "Papa is a very silly man who doesn't know what medicine to give you. Do you have a medical alert tag, or..."

"I have my bracelet," Joanne said, showing it to him. "And a card!" She produced a laminated card from one pocket. On one side were dosages in French, on the other, English. "I can't read it yet," she whispered, "but you said it's for other people just in case."

"That is exactly right," Jean-Paul said, taking it from her and examining it carefully. He could do this. He was not panicking.

He was mostly not panicking.

Lulu laid one hand on his forearm, what she hoped would be a comfort to him, or, at least, offer him a bit of stability. An anchor. "We can call the clinic," she said, "and explain the situation. If they don't have what we need, then I'll watch Joanne and you can run off to New York, all right?"

"If I leave her," Jean-Paul said, "she might disappear."

This seemed perfectly reasonable to him.

"She will not disappear," Lulu said. "Do you trust me? If you need to go, I will make certain that she does not disappear."

Jean-Paul nodded. "Oui, oui, I trust you. I just..." he flexed one hand. "I am lost here."

"That's what I'm here for, Jean-Paul," Lulu assured him. "To help you when you are lost, just as I am certain you would do for me, were the situation reversed." She looked to Joanne. "How are you enjoying the cereal?" she asked.

"It's very good, ma'am," Joanne said, carefully picking up a Cheerio with two fingers. "Thank you."

Part of Jean-Paul was wondering where a child of his had gotten, you know, manners. And contractions in English. He blamed Walter.

"You're very welcome," Lulu replied. To Jean-Paul, she asked, "Would you like me to call the clinic for you? To see if they can provide what we need?"

"I--no. I should call. I am her father." Sort of. "Thank you, though. I will...be right back."

Lulu nodded. "Take all the time you need," she said. That he should do so for whatever reasons he might need to take time went unsaid. "I'll keep an eye on Joanne. Truth be told, she seems rather able to occupy herself."

Joanne was, in fact, currently singing a French children's song softly to her cereal. "I expect--what with the single, superhero parent and all--she has had to learn. Joanne," he told her, "I will be going out for a few minutes. Miss Lulu will watch you."

"'kay," said Joanne without looking up.

Jean-Paul said simply, "Thank you," to Lulu and fled to A) find medicine and B) have a nervous breakdown. Not necessarily in that order.
